Ullr is called the ‘Patron Saint of Skiers‘. Ullr is the mythical Norse God of Winter who enjoyed the cold weather and loved traveling throughout the land, gliding along on his skis or snowshoes. He was, in fact, unbeatable on skis, never losing a race. Some believe the Aurora Borealis is the snow flying off the tail of his skis. In Germanic mythology Ullr is the main ski god of the 19th and 20th century. His character helped to establish a feeling of common identity among skiing pioneers in Norway and Central Europe, who prayed to him to ensure the earth would be covered with snow, protecting it from winter’s harm. In the United States, ski towns throw parties and parades in his honor.

Let me know if you find any good cross-country ski trails close to Worthington! I brought my skis to town about a month ago and have not found a single place to go. I grew up near the Twin Cities where there are cross-country ski trails everywhere. And ski waxing was a big deal- we would check the weather the night before a race and wax our skis accordingly. Sounds crazy, I know! Good luck on your race!
Daniel, sorry your comment slipped through the cracks. Halloween bowl is generally accessed from Schofield, if you can still get up there after the recent snow. It is generally pretty difficult to drive past the first switchback on Slate River, which leaves you pretty low, though I have accessed Baldy that way as well. Sometimes Wash gulch is the best way. Early season is a bit of a crapshoot in terms of which road is the best access. Think snow- it’s a lot easier with a base and the normal winter trailheads
