Atkeson received many honors for his work, including Oregon’s Photographer Laureate and induction into the Photographic Hall of Fame.
Atkeson Ski Poster of Alf Engen Skiing Powder in Alta, Utah

This stunning poster by famed photographer Ray Atkeson celebrates pioneer powder skier Alf Engen, skiing his beloved powder at Alta, Utah. Of course many know of his connection to Alta and the Alta Ski School that he ran for many years.

The Utah History Encyclopedia reported, “Alf Engen began his impressive professional career by capturing the National Jumping Champion title eight times between the years of 1931 and 1946.

All skiers know that their Goggles and Sunglasses are as important as the rest of their equipment. Even in the early days of skiing, measures were taken to protect one’s eyes from the sun, snow glare and weather. Vintage Ski World is proud to offer a number of guaranteed original Bolle vintage sunglasses! Click here to start shopping for your pair of vintage sunglasses.

These vintage Bolle Sunglasses were strongly endorsed by the triple Olympic champion, Jean Claude Killy. He can be seen wearing them in many of his photos, looking extremely cool with his signature look.

Decades ago, Jean Claude Killy was the Bolle Sunglasses guy! As the ‘cool’ & good looking triple Olympic Champion, from the 1968 Grenoble France Olympics, Bolle was really pleased to have him endorsing their Sunglasses.

Jean Claude Killy made these sunglasses a ‘must have’ for skiers around the world. These vintage sunglasses have the classic ‘red, white and blue trim’ around the edge of the frame, which cannot be seen in his photo’s straight on view.

These vintage sunglasses were discovered in the warehouse of the original importer, although this actual import from France was made in the 1960′s. The sunglasses are in their original Bolle packaging too. Endorsed through the years by Jean Claude Killy, the packaging is complete with the Killy sticker.

These 1960′s Red, White and Blue Sunglasses were a huge hit at the Ski Industries of America (SIA) trade show in Denver this year. As I, (Richard Allen) wore them around the show, I got lots of attention from everyone, especially the ladies! People were wanting to buy them off my face, but as I only had one pair at the time, all offers were refused.

Fortunately we now have them available for sale at a price way below what I was being offered at the SIA Show.

Additionally, we have found a number of Vintage Ski Goggles – like the 1960′s Cebe Killy Goggles or the 1960′s Paraski Goggles that we now offer for sale. They are both great collector’s items and also fun to wear!

1960′s Cebe Killy ski goggles. These classic vintage ski goggles have adjustable air vents to prevent fogging. The Aspen General Store sold these for about $10.00 back in the day. Cebe was a sponsor of the US Ski Team in the 1960′s.

Don’t miss a chance to sport these bubble eyed Original 1960′s vintage Paraski Goggles on the slopes! Your friends will be asking for a pair too. These are also a fun addition to your vintage collection. Each 1960′s original box has a set of Green and Yellow distortion-free lenses.

Do you remember any of these vintage sunglasses or goggle? We would love to hear anything that you have to share about them.

Remember the first sexy Lange Girl poster from 1970, called Soft Inside? It was at the beginning of a long series of memorable Lange Girl posters, which came out every season.

What baby boomer skier doesn’t remember the Soft Inside poster hanging in the local ski shop? That was before they had to be taken down, due to the threats of sexual harassment law suits, according to info from a ski shop insurance agent, Jake Hoeschler. Fortunately, Skiing Magazine, and other ski related magazines, sold this poster to skiers for $1 in the early 70′s. These of course got hung in dorm rooms, garages, and basements.

Now let’s be honest -Soft Inside? The Lange ski boots were anything but Soft Inside! They hurt like hell! It’s no wonder the marketing team pared a bold face lie with a gorgeous model!

Poster of Soft Inside Lange Boots

Because these new plastic ski boots were so cool and high tech, everyone put up with the pain. Including saps like me!

Remember the famous “Lange Bang“? Everyone who wore these can remember bruising or ‘banging’ their shins with the hard Lange liners. ‘After ski boots’ were never so popular! Personally I wonder why Bob Lange wasn’t sued for false advertising. Maybe it’s because all of us were so seduced by the Lange Girls, plus we hoped to be the ‘coolest’ skiers on the slopes with our new shinny plastic boots.

Click to View/Purchase our Lange Boots

Additionally I must admit that they really helped the skier have a whole new advantage in ‘edge control’. Therefore, they were used by the famous skiers like Jean Claude Killy. So all of us as young skiers just acknowledged that it was worth it to suck up the pain, because we skied way better than our peers who were still in the leather boots.

I think the painfully hard Lange boots were that the reason for the creation of the thick padded socks, with inch of foam around the shin area and top of the boots. I was too cool to wear those socks, but my mom had them and they are still in my collection.

I had the Lange Comp with the yellow liner, which I thought was the coolest color, especially since I had my black Head skis with the yellow bottoms. What color were your liners? And I’d love to hear anything you have to say about these boots and posters.

Let’s Pray for Snow to Ullr!
Ullr is called the ‘Patron Saint of Skiers‘. Ullr is the mythical Norse God of Winter who enjoyed the cold weather and loved traveling throughout the land, gliding along on his skis or snowshoes. He was, in fact, unbeatable on skis, never losing a race. Some believe the Aurora Borealis is the snow flying off the tail of his skis. In Germanic mythology Ullr is the main ski god of the 19th and 20th century. His character helped to establish a feeling of common identity among skiing pioneers in Norway and Central Europe, who prayed to him to ensure the earth would be covered with snow, protecting it from winter’s harm. In the United States, ski towns throw parties and parades in his honor.
